Creating a Vision for Your Breakthrough Year in Real Estate

As we dive into today’s topic—crafting a vision for your business and your life—let’s talk about one of the most important tools in building a successful real estate career: your vision. Whether you’re a seasoned real estate professional or someone who’s been in the game for a few years, it’s essential to continually ask yourself the big questions. What do you want your business to look like in the future? More importantly, what do you want your life to look like?

As real estate professionals, we often get caught up in the day-to-day grind. We’re chasing deals, meeting with clients, managing listings, and, let’s face it, trying to keep up with the demands of an ever-evolving market. But what’s driving all that hard work? The key to creating not just a successful business but a fulfilling life is to align your personal and professional vision.

In today’s coaching minute, we’re going to break down how to craft a powerful vision that will not only set the tone for your business but also help you live the life you’ve always dreamed of.

The Importance of Vision: More Than Just Business

The first step in this process is visioning. But here’s the catch: your vision can’t be just about business success. It has to go deeper than that. What legacy do you want to leave behind? How do you want to live? What do you want life to look like for you and your family? Those are the types of questions that will help you craft a vision that inspires and motivates you, day in and day out.

Let’s talk about an inspiring quote from Helen Keller, who once said, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.” This quote speaks volumes about the importance of not just seeing what’s in front of you but being able to envision what’s possible—even if it’s not immediately visible.

In real estate, it’s easy to get caught up in what’s right in front of us: listings, deals, and commissions. But without a clear vision for your business and life, you’ll always be chasing the next thing, without ever finding real fulfillment.

So how do we start building that vision? How do we set ourselves up for long-term success, not just in business but in life?

Crafting Big, Audacious Goals (BHAGs)

When it comes to setting your business goals, I always tell my clients to think big. You’ve probably heard the phrase, “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” Well, that’s exactly what we’re talking about here.

It’s not enough to set small, easily achievable goals. You need to set Big, Hairy, Audacious Goals (BHAGs). These are the kinds of goals that might feel impossible at first, but as we break them down, you’ll realize they’re more achievable than you think. Here’s the thing: your brain is wired to turn the impossible into the possible, if you approach goal-setting in the right way.

Now, here’s where I want you to get practical. Grab a pen and paper, or open a notes app on your phone, and I want you to write down a few things:

  • Impossible
  • Possible
  • Probable
  • Given

We’ll use these four words to help you shape your big goals and turn them into reality.

Step 1: The Impossible

Write down your Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal. Maybe you want to double your real estate business in the next 12 months. Maybe you want to grow your client base in a luxury market. Maybe you dream of transitioning to a leadership role in your firm. Whatever your big goal is, write it down, even if it feels impossible right now.

Step 2: The Possible

Now that you’ve written down what seems like an impossible goal, let’s start to shift your mindset. Ask yourself the visioning question: “What if this were true?” What if you really could double your business in the next year? What if you could take your business to that next level? Once you start to believe in the possibility, you’ll notice that what once seemed impossible is now something you can imagine happening.

Step 3: The Probable

This is where the magic happens. Once your brain believes in the possibility, we move on to the how. How can you make this possible? What steps do you need to take to make this goal probable? This is where we start developing your action plan. You don’t have to know every single step yet, but you do need to take the first one.

Step 4: The Given

Now, we’re getting to the point where your actions start to manifest results. This is where your big goals move from probable to given. As you incorporate planned actions into your daily routine, you’ll see real progress, and that “impossible” goal you wrote down at the start? It becomes your reality.

Building Your Business Plan: The 1-3-5 Action Planning Strategy

Now that you’ve envisioned your big goal and started breaking it down, it’s time to craft a plan. One of the tools I use with my clients is the 1-3-5 Action Planning Goal Sheet. This is a simple yet powerful way to outline your goals and the steps you’ll take to achieve them.

Here’s how it works:

One Big Goal: What’s the one thing you want to accomplish? This should be your BHAG.

Three Priorities: What are three major priorities or milestones that will help you achieve that big goal? These could be things like increasing your client base, improving your marketing strategy, or building stronger relationships with your past clients.

Five Strategies for Each Priority: For each priority, list five strategies or action steps. These are the tasks you’ll need to focus on daily or weekly to make progress toward your goal.

Using the 1-3-5 strategy ensures that you’re not just dreaming big but also taking consistent action. Remember, it’s not enough to have a vision. You need a plan to back it up, and that’s what we help you build at Set Sail.

The Importance of a Strong “Why”

Now that we’ve got your big goal and your action plan in place, let’s talk about one more crucial component: your “why. Why are you doing this? What’s going to keep you motivated on those days when you just don’t feel like doing the work?

Your “why is tied to your vision. It’s the reason you’re willing to put in the effort. Whether it’s providing a better life for your family, leaving a legacy for future generations, or achieving financial freedom, your “why” will pull you through the tough days.

As I always tell my coaching clients, “With a big enough “why”, you can endure any how.” Your “why” will help you push through those moments of doubt, and it will remind you of the bigger picture.

The Final Stage: From Vision to Reality

Now that you’ve set your goals, created a plan, and connected with your “why”, it’s time to take action. This is the stage where everything comes together. As you start incorporating your planned actions into your daily routine, you’ll notice that your probable goal is becoming a given. The impossible is now within reach.

Remember, this isn’t a quick fix. Achieving your breakthrough year will require consistent effort, but if you stay committed to your vision and your plan, you’ll see real results.

Your Breakthrough Year Awaits

My goal for you is simple: I want this to be your breakthrough year. I want you to look back at the end of this year and see how much you’ve accomplished. I want you to feel proud of the progress you’ve made and excited about what’s to come.

But for that to happen, you have to start now. Don’t wait for the perfect moment or the right circumstances. Start today. Write down your big, hairy, audacious goals. Ask yourself, “What if this were true?” and start taking action.

I believe in you. I know that with the right vision, plan, and action, you can achieve the success you’ve always dreamed of. So go out there and make it happen. Cheers to your breakthrough year!
